~Last in the Women of Significance Series (and by no means was this even a small portion of them!)~

As one of the best-known female composers and performers of the Baroque era, she is the first woman known to have written an opera. She could sing and play keyboard, guitar and harp, and learned Latin and studied literature after serving in the Medici Court (in Florence), composing music for court spectacles.

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - 1653)

Daughter of well-known Roman artist, Orazio Gentileschi (1563 - 1639), Artemisia was one of the first women artists to achieve recognition in the male-dominated world of post-Renaissance art. In an era when female artists were limited to portrait painting and imitative poses, she was the first woman to paint major historical scenarios.

Eleanor "Nell"Gwyn ~ aka 'The Protestant Whore' (1650-1687)

Pretty, witty Nell, labeled as such by Samuel Pepys and most famous for being one of many  mistresses of King Charles II,  was one of the first actresses in British theatre where she met His Majesty. She became his favorite concubine and was most beloved amongst the commonry, bearing two of his children, one of which became the Duke of St. Albans.

After ascending the throne at age 18, Christina created the 'Court of Learning', turning her attentions to literature and science. She also sponsored many artists and musicians, and financed the majority of theatrical and operatic productions in the country.

Marie-Louise-Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun (1755-1842)

Vigee-Lebrun was the most famous female painter of the 18th century. This prolific artist painted almost 700 portraits in the span of nearly 45 years.

Gabrielle-Emilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Chatelet-Lomont (1706-1749)  

French mathematician, physicist, and author during the Age of Enlightenment, her crowning achievement was considered to be the translation and commentary on Isaac Newton's work 'Principia Mathematica'; published in 1759. Voltaire, one of her lovers, declared that du Chatelet was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman."
